Definitely not much sense
It appears the Church would have been fine with both lives being lost, rather than the mother's live being saved so that she could continue on and care for her already born children.

One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church
How Christ-like.

Excommunication
This is simply outrageous. Nicholas Kristof commented:

...I've written several times about the gulf between Roman Catholic leaders at the top and the nuns, priests and laity who often live the Sermon on the Mount at the grass roots. They represent the great soul of the church, which isn't about vestments but selflessness.

When a hierarchy of mostly aging men pounce on and excommunicate a revered nun who was merely trying to save a mother's life, the church seems to me almost as out of touch as it was in the cruel and debauched days of the Borgias in the Renaissance.

I wonder if all religious institutions must necessarily become deeply corrupt and alienated from their true purpose, only to be reformed, remade, endlessly... I mean, it has happened time and again in catholicism, and we've seen similar things in Buddhism (for example, mahayana as a response to asceticism.) It goes on and on...while real, ordinary folk suffer. Sigh.

It goes on and on...
True.
