prayer request for Don Ross

Many of you know or know of Don Ross the creator of Nichiren's Coffee House and Gohonzon Gallery
http://nichirenscoffeehouse.net/

He is undergoing some serious medical challenges.
This was posted on Independent Sangha:

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask a favor. After 29 years with HIV, the virus is finally
winning the battle. The last month has been very difficult, sleeping 20/hrs a
day or so. Spent a week in the hospital too. My heart is barely working; kidneys
are practically shut down; wasting syndrome;  numerous other ailments. The doc
said if I can live through this next week, I might have a chance of living
though it.

So your daimoku or prayers to the deity of your choice would be most welcome.

Thank you for your good thoughts,
Rev Don Ross

Hope you pull through, man. I'm talking to the medicine Buddha right now. John in California

save the coffeehouse
I don't want to sound crass, and believe me Don will be in my prayers, but someone needs to save his site from going down. Don't know if Don has thought of that, but anyone who has studied Nichiren Buddhism has been there. It is an important site.

Coffeehouse
Thanks for the heads up, Clown. Don and his coffeehouse site did more than anyone else to spread nichiren buddhism in America. He made the gohonzon freely available to anyone with an internet connection, and with no strings attached. He built the best study site and the most comprehensive collection of nichiren-related links. I don't know him and do not know what motivated him, but his efforts totally opened up the practice and made it possible for people to practice independently without having to join an organization. I seriously think that his contributions to nichiren buddhism far surpass SGI. Thank you, Don. Good work.

Don Ross
I am sad to hear this. The Gohonzon in my home found its way to me through Don. I am grateful to have it and grateful to Don for making it available.

As for the coffeehouse, the site is probably cached thru the wayback machine.

My view of websites is that they are perishable. They are phantom cities that arise when needed, then they disappear when their mission is complete. Sometimes they go through several incarnations according to who's involved in making the site and what they're trying to accomplish. That's the lifecycle of a website in my opinion.

So if the coffeehouse were to disappear overnight (I doubt this will happen) maybe the coffeehouse has done its job and the way has been cleared for the next phase, so to speak.

Site backed up
I went ahead and mirrored the coffeehouse to my hard drive. I know Don and he knows me, though we have never met. He tends to want people believe that his accomplishments don't matter, but I caught him in that and he admitted to me that it does matter. :)

I will only publish the mirror if he has no one else to take it over. I don't think this site should go down, and it was huge, BTW.

Don is a Bodhisattva of the Earth, even though he was controversial, and I hope he makes it. Maybe he'll cut me a break someday. :)

Thank you!
Markp, thanks for doing this. I do not know much about the technical aspects of websites so I have no idea what mirroring a site entails. I bet it was loads of work. So thanks for taking the initiative.

Brooke, maybe you can let go of sites (and other things) easier than other people. I can't fault your views. But I do remember when the first version of BuddhaJones went offline. It sort of felt like someone had died. So don't discount the relationships that people form online and with certain websites.

site mirroring
Wasn't any work at all. I knew there had to be a free program to do the work, so I just looked for it. It's called HTTrack. :)
