Should we stay or go?

The time has come once again for us to pay the bill for our hosting/software license. The person who actually pays the bill has asked me if I wish to keep this site online, since I am the person primarily responsible for posting updates.

I've been really bad about posting updates, haven't I? The idea of BuddhaJones is that it's a group blog where people can post topics as well as comment on other posts. But it's my job to keep the ball rolling.

Our traffic statistics remain high, with the majority of people finding this site through search engines when looking for info on Nichiren Buddhism and related topics.

So I put the question to you: Should we stay or go? You can post a comment below or e-mail me at nine@buddhajones.com.

Hi Nine,

I am Jane-come-lately to Buddha Jones.  All the same, I really enjoy the site, and say, stay on.  Buddha Jones has a nice laidback vibe, where I can just kick back and check out the postings.

What would be the use of going?
As long as BuddhaJones stays it is useful to people wanting to learn about Nichiren Buddhism. My site gets traffic from this one just because it has a link on it. In fact, it is the top referrer next to Google.

I signed up out of interest. Don't know much about Nichiren or his version of Buddhism besides what I've read in SGI material (I'm not a member). I gather SGI is not very popular among frequenters of this site and I think the site is valuable for that very reason: there needs to be a neutral forum for people to discuss and learn about the sect.

Staying
OK, so we're going to stay online for at least another year. SoapBlox, the company that created the software platform we're using, has been acquired by warecorp. We've been promised an update of the software. From what I understand, this update will add more features to make it easier to share our content across the web, plus other things to clear up several technical difficulties. I don't know when this update will happen.

Several people have expressed ideas for how to make Nichiren Buddhism more accessible to native English speakers -- Americans, primarily. One person expressed a need for a multi-sectarian questions and answers. For example: What do beginners need to know about the Gohonzon? This is a good question, and the answer is potentially very involved, taking into consideration protocols for the various schools (Nichiren Shu, Kempon Hokke, etc.) and "independent" ideas.

We have a few volunteers who are willing to research and try to answer questions on this site. But ideally, we want to crowdsource these questions. YOU out there in Internetland have knowledge to share, and we hope you'll share it here in diaries and comments.

It's my job to keep the conversation alive -- so you'll have something to comment about. I'll do my best.

Once you create a user name/account here, you can post comments and diaries. The comment threads close automatically after 30 days (to prevent spam.) So If you want to comment on a topic or propose a new topic, or just share random thoughts, you can post a new diary at any time. It will appear in the second column to the right.

If you want to post under your own name, that's fine. I think it's best to use a screen name/alias to keep old web feuds out of the mix, and give everyone the freedom to speak up anonymously. In the past, some people posting on web forums under their own names have been harassed by other people loyal to various factions. We don't want that to happen to anyone posting here, so we welcome anonymous (pseudononymous) participation.

Should we stay or go?
STAY!

There are many of us not going to meetings for one reason or another, although I am SGI and I don't hate the SGI.

This gives me a forum to share things.
