Why?
What is this for? The book project?

"If only I had a nickel for every time I've heard someone say that the Soka skunk has changed its stripe." -- auntie

NO way
It could be to frighten naughty posters and those infected with Whimsy?

What we post could well be taken down and used in evidence.

Has Bodhisattva Law Enforcer arrived in town?

Yes
The idea is to create a free e-book primer on Nichiren Buddhism and a "greatest hits" version of BuddhaJones for kindle or whatever. I thought that "read and participate at your own risk" covered everything, but Nine went and got some legal advice.

LA time
I am also changing the timecodes on the site to reflect the time in Los Angeles, CA. I don't mean to slight the Rocky Mountain participants, or any other group. Just dotting the i, crossing the t.

Time Zone
For users that don't know, you can set your own time zone under Menu | USER's Page | Profile | Display Prefs.  This overrides the default site setting.

True
Adjust it how you want it. As for timeframe of the project, it's still a long way off. I posted the notice, but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up that we'll be completing this project soon.

In other site-related news, we've moved to new servers with a new host. More changes are coming, but we're told that they won't be disruptive.

Good Advice?
So was the advice about using a kindle or the advisability and health risks of Nichiren Buddhism?

Both seem to have unique but equally worrying risks?

"A relentless addiction to indignation may be one of the chief drivers of obstinate dogmatism,"

"Religion is a major weapon in the war against reality."

Need more...
Shouldn't you also have a note or warning for users not to post anything in a comment or diary that isn't their own, or that they aren't willing to place under the CC-NC-SA license you've assigned to the site?

At least users need to be told to identify sources of things in comments so that you can reasonably follow your own policy and have those things "otherwise noted" as not CC content.

Fair Use
Fair use allows people to post brief quotes from published sources. We've traditionally, automatically deleted posts that cut and paste long passages from sources. That's not the kind of thing we'd put in a kindle book anyway. People have posted excerpts from their own books here, and we love that. But we wouldn't put that in a kindle. Editorially a book is a different animal than a website. Read and participate at your own risk is a caveat good enough for the web.

For now maybe
But the law might be changing dramatically soon.

You should be very afraid of a pair of bills that threaten Internet freedom:

Both the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA would create a national firewall by censoring the domain names of websites accused of hosting infringing copyrighted materials. This legislation would enable law enforcement to take down the entire tumblr.com domain due to something posted on a single blog. Yes, an entire, largely innocent online community could be punished for the actions of a tiny minority.

Nine, I am sure you are aware too that original content from this site is routinely plagiarized by other people, cut-and-pasted whole without attribution onto other blogs and message boards. How can you protect against that? I figure, whatever I post here, I have no control over once I click "post."

It reminds me of when M. Simon died and there were questions about whether to re-post the M. Simon content on this new incarnation of BuddhaJones. Ah, good ol' M. Simon. I sure do miss him or her. ;)
