What's In A Date?

by: ten2one

Fri Nov 04, 2011 at 06:49:04 AM PDT

For some Dates are an issue.

That's not wine, dine and maybe the cinema. It's the calendar, the 364 or 5 days of the year and how the same date keeps on coming round every twelve months.

Ethnographic study has highlighted the following:

Members memorialize dates, places, and events in Ikeda's life as part of a ritual calendar around which they formulate their own lives. They are informed constantly about his meetings with world figures, his awards, and his thoughts on all matters, such as Buddhism, literature, and history. Ikeda Daisaku has become a framing device; everything in the life of a maximally devoted Gakkai member is measured in
juxtaposition to Ikeda's opinions and biography. By endowing him with the sole authority on all matters - doctrine, philosophy, human behavior, and everything else - while simultaneously denying the possibility of anyone else succeeding him, Sōka Gakkai has essentially rendered Ikeda Daisaku an ahistorical force; he and his mission
transcend this-worldly limitations, and even in death, Sōka Gakkai will forever be dedicated to him.

There is a date looming on the calendar, Nov. 28, 1991.

Does anyone know or remember why it is supposed to be significant?

Facebook

So I'm on Facebook and I get a friend request from "Soka member." Now to send me a friend request he has to be an individual, right? With a real name. Well I can't tell if "Soka member" is a group or a person. Anyway, Facebook says this:

Accounts are for personal use only. To represent a celebrity, business or brand, please create a Facebook Page. Pages are for representing a real public figure, artist, brand or organization and may only be created by an official representative of that entity. You can list your maiden name as your alternate name on the Account Settings page. Please note that account names that include "was", "nee", and "formerly" are not allowed.

Accounts can represent one person only. Accounts representing groups, families, or couples are not allowed.

Japan Times Censors Its SGI Article

by: beryl

Wed Dec 03, 2008 at 12:06:45 PM PST

Follow-up to my previous post, via Japan Probe. The original version of the Japan Times article included a section headed "Is there a shady side to Ikeda?" which talked about the Nobuhira suit brought against Ikeda, which alleges rape. That section has been deleted, as you can see here -- Japan Probe has the original text.

Why She Ditched SGI

by: brooke

Tue Dec 02, 2008 at 12:26:31 PM PST

Tanya at Start Wearing Purple explains why she left the SGI...and what she's doing now:

So I have started my own religion. I call it Hectic Eclectic and I embrace all things and nothing. In fact, I do a lot of embracing. I've named myself the Huru Guru and I am basking in my own glory.

I am much happier calling my own shots.

Japan Times On SGI

by: beryl

Mon Dec 01, 2008 at 15:12:31 PM PST

"Soka Gakkai keeps religious, political machine humming." Short article. Some interesting bits of info:

Out of the 10 million Soka Gakkai members, 2.5 million regularly participate in religious meetings and try to increase membership, according to Hiromi Shimada, a religion scholar who has written several books about the group. Soka Gakkai has 1.69 million members outside Japan.

Interesting that even in Japan, the "active" membership of SGI is comparatively low. Also, in response to the question "What is Soka Gakkai worth?" in Japan:

It declines to disclose a figure. But Shimada estimates its assets total about ¥500 billion. These include its headquarters and branch buildings across Japan and the Seikyo Shimbun. Most revenues come from member donations. Other sources are newspaper sales and ad revenue.

500 billion yen is about $5.25 billion U.S. I welcome mathematical corrections. Link.

Soka Loves the People's Republic of China

by: mroaks

Suck it up, Dalai Lama. You'll get neither support nor sympathy from Soka Gakkai, whose leaders are longtime admirers and friends of China.

Each year, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda writes a "Peace Proposal" prescribing actions to achieve world peace. His recipe for peace in Asia is simple: greater friendship between China and Japan. Tibet has never rated a mention.

Why won't SGI use its carefully constructed relationship with the Chinese government to lobby on behalf of the Tibetan people?

SGI Building Bombed in Japan

It happened last month. An arrest has been made. From a Chinese news report:

TOKYO, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Police arrested a man Friday for allegedly detonating explosives last month at a cultural hall of Japan's largest lay Buddhist organization, Soka Gakkai, and at a separate building housing a local Japan-China friendship association, both in the city of Tokushima in Shikoku, the police said.
