The swine flu vaccine is limited in supplies and H1N1 is spreading like wildfire. This combination should send us all running for the hills, right? No, not at all actually. According to BrowardPalmBeach, when in doubt, do nothing. The media has publicised H1N1, the government has aided in public panic and the health care industry has nothing to lose by the hysteria. That is a combination most Americans are not going to trust.

How can you tell that interest in Buddhism is growing in the west?
I wish it was because of increasing number of compassionate, gentle, and mindful people everywhere. But, no.
You can tell interest in Buddhism is growing because of CRAP like this hitting the streets.

Wham! Ouch. That's the sound of my investment portfolio crashing to the ground. At least I have an investment portfolio, which is more than many financially strapped Americans can say.
So often, Nichiren Buddhists interpret problems and turmoil in our environment as "punishment." Some are tempted to say that, in this financial crisis, Americans are getting their knuckles rapped by a scowling, disciplinarian Universe.
Permit me, please, to apply a somewhat more positive and hopeful interpretation....

The web is bursting with Buddhist brainiacs who've read all the teachings and know all the shizz. I'm not one of them. I'm ignorant, and that's OK. When it comes to practicing Buddhism, there can be value in knowin' squat.
Lots of people are intimidated by the obscure vocabulary of Buddhism. They're flummoxed by intricate theories and doctrines. Worse, they worry that they need to have the "right attitude" (some kind of reverence?) or feel a deep sense of meaning or personal connection to Buddhism to benefit from chanting Namu-myoho-renge-kyo.
To them, I say: It's so basic and simple. Just chant Namu-myoho-renge-kyo. Why complicate it?

I'm stunned. Really. This site has been online for about one month. In that short time, we've logged more than 1,200 unique visitors from 32 countries and served up almost 11,000 pageviews. For a new, tiny site about a fairly obscure topic, that's significant traffic.
Before we launched, I questioned the need for another Nichiren site. Message boards and blogs abound. Plus, I didn't want to get back in the fray. Nichiren practitioners aren't known for genteel manners. Online debate can become exhausting.
Plus, there's the Bowling Club. Mroaks observed, "Bowling -- ryhmes with controlling." I would add, "Club -- as in cudgel."

Is understanding Buddhist jargon; or technical knowledge in general, essential? How about understanding the differences between the various sects; the Nichiren schools, the Nichiren derived schools, and other forms of Buddhism; is that necessary?

Let me jump right in and see how inflammatory I can be without resorting to sectarian terminology.
The abuse and oppression of women in the name of religion is absolute insanity. Iran is cracking down on women who reveal their hair in public, for heaven's sake.
Women in many parts of the world are targets of violence at the hands of religious extremists for a variety of "crimes" such as leaving home unescorted by a male, not being a virgin prior to marriage or, um, being a victim of rape.
That's crazy.
And the crazy is everywhere, not just over there. It's right here in the Land of the Free, too.
